The innovation and Made in Italy technology of Overmat have made a mark on a construction project of historic significance: the building of Karlatornet, the tallest skyscraper in the Scandinavian Peninsula.
This iconic tower, standing 246 meters tall with 74 floors, is the centerpiece of the new Karlastaden district—an ambitious residential and commercial development that is reshaping the skyline of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Karlatornet: A Symbol of Modernity for Scandinavia

Located in the former industrial area of Götaälven, the Karlatornet project is part of a vast urban regeneration plan that will give rise to Karlastaden—a mixed-use district with 143,000 square meters of buildings designated for housing, offices, shops, and public spaces.
Designed by the Danish firm Entasis in collaboration with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Karlatornet is set to become a benchmark of Nordic architecture. With its 611 apartments and impressive engineering structure, the tower surpasses Malmö’s Turning Torso, which previously held the record for the region’s tallest building at 190 meters.
But the real construction challenge of Karlatornet lies in its foundations: the structure is supported by 58 piles, each 2 meters in diameter and anchored up to 60 meters deep into the underlying bedrock, ensuring stability and safety.

 

Overmat’s Contribution: Advanced Technology for an Exceptional Project

Such an ambitious project required cutting-edge construction solutions, and Overmat, an internationally recognized leader in the production of screed machines, was called upon to contribute its innovative technology. Swedish client ISOBETONG used an Overmat self-leveling screed truck — model MSA 18.9 ALS in semi-trailer version — to produce lightweight subfloors for the residential complex. In particular, Overmat supplied around 450 cubic meters of pre-mixed subfloor material for the courtyard on the 11th floor of the skyscraper.
The courtyard on floor 11 (level +8 m) is part of the common base that connects the three community “towers”: one with 11 floors, one with 8, and one with a lower base.
The base, constructed of brick with large glass windows, evokes the area’s industrial past and serves as a hub for community life—ideal for outdoor spaces such as courtyards, plazas, or relaxation areas.

The MSA 18.9 ALS liquid screed machine was chosen for its precision and versatility, as it is specifically designed for laying anhydrite and cement-based self-leveling screeds with extremely high accuracy. Thanks to its cutting-edge technical features, the plant ensures flawless application, minimizes material waste, and delivers excellent results.
